Technique of the Week – Two Sweeps from Reverse De La Riva

In this week’s Technique of the Week video, we will be exploring two effective sweeps from the Reverse De La Riva guard position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The Reverse De La Riva guard is a versatile position that allows you to control and off-balance your opponent, setting up various attacks and sweeps.

The first sweep we will be covering is the Reverse De La Riva Hook Sweep. To execute this sweep, you start by establishing the Reverse De La Riva hook on your opponent’s lead leg. From here, you use your grips and body positioning to off-balance your opponent. As they try to regain their balance, you kick your hooking leg forward while simultaneously pushing with your grips, causing your opponent to fall backward. This sweep allows you to end up in a dominant top position, ready to capitalize on your opponent’s vulnerability.

The second sweep in this video is the Reverse De La Riva Spin Under Sweep. This sweep is highly effective against opponents who try to pass your guard by stepping over your leg. As your opponent attempts to step over your leg, you use your grips and hip movement to generate momentum. With a quick spin, you bring your leg underneath your opponent, knocking them off balance and sweeping them to the ground. This sweep not only gives you the advantage in the fight but also puts you in a perfect position to attack with submissions or transitions to other dominant positions.

Throughout this video, our experienced BJJ instructor will break down each step of the technique, providing detailed explanations and demonstrations. They will also highlight common mistakes to avoid and provide tips to make the sweeps more effective.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner, these two sweeps from the Reverse De La Riva guard will add valuable tools to your BJJ arsenal. By mastering these techniques, you will have the ability to control and dictate the pace of the fight from a position that many opponents find difficult to navigate.
