De La Riva Sweep (1 of 3)

Welcome to our YouTube channel, where we bring you the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques! In this video, we will be exploring the De La Riva Sweep, focusing on the first variation out of a series of three. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner, this technique will add an effective sweep to your arsenal.

The De La Riva Sweep is a fundamental technique that originates from the De La Riva guard, a highly versatile and dynamic position in BJJ. This particular variation is the perfect starting point for those new to the De La Riva guard, as it provides a solid foundation for future sweeps and submissions.

To begin, we will assume that you have successfully established the De La Riva guard. Your opponent stands in front of you, attempting to pass your guard and gain a dominant position. Here’s where the magic happens.

First, you need to secure the De La Riva hook on your opponent’s same-side leg (the leg closest to you). This hook is essential for maintaining control and setting up the sweep. With the De La Riva hook in place, you gain leverage over your opponent’s balance and stability, creating an advantageous position for yourself.

Next, as your opponent tries to pressure forward, you will use your free foot to hook behind their knee on the opposite side. This hook acts as a pivot point, allowing you to generate the necessary power for the sweep. Your opponent’s weight will be shifted to the side where the hook is placed, making them vulnerable to the sweep.

Now comes the crucial moment. With the De La Riva and knee hooks in place, you will extend your legs and push your opponent’s knee in the direction of the De La Riva hook. Simultaneously, you will pull their same-side sleeve, off-balancing them and causing them to fall onto their side or back. This combination of leg extension, knee push, and sleeve pull creates a powerful sweeping motion, catching your opponent off guard.

In this video, we will break down the De La Riva Sweep step-by-step, providing detailed instructions and demonstrations to ensure that you grasp the technique properly. Our experienced instructor will share valuable tips and insights, highlighting common mistakes to avoid and variations to explore.
