What’s The Difference Between Anaconda, Darce & Brabo Chokes ?

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), chokes are one of the most effective and common submission techniques used to force an opponent into submission. Among the various types of chokes, the Anaconda, Darce, and Brabo chokes are often confused due to their similarities. Firstly, let’s start with the Anaconda choke. This choke gets its name from the way a constrictor snake wraps its body around its prey. To execute an Anaconda choke, the attacker slips their arm underneath the opponent’s neck, securing a grip on their own bicep. From here, the attacker uses their other arm to wrap around the opponent’s head, effectively trapping their neck. By squeezing their arms together and applying pressure, the attacker restricts the opponent’s blood flow, forcing them to submit.

Next, we have the Darce choke, which is also known as the “Brabo choke” or the “No-Gi Brabo choke”. This choke is executed by sliding an arm underneath the opponent’s neck, similar to the Anaconda choke. However, instead of securing a grip on their own bicep, the attacker reaches across the opponent’s neck, grabbing their own bicep on the opposite side. This grip creates a strong leverage point, allowing the attacker to apply pressure on the opponent’s carotid arteries, cutting off their blood flow and causing them to submit.

Lastly, the Brabo choke, also known as the “D’Arce choke” or “No-Gi D’Arce choke”, shares similarities with both the Anaconda and Darce chokes. To perform a Brabo choke, the attacker wraps their arm around the opponent’s neck, just like in the Anaconda choke. However, instead of securing a grip on their own bicep, the attacker reaches underneath the opponent’s arm, grabbing their own wrist. This grip tightens the choke by creating compression on both sides of the opponent’s neck, ultimately leading to their submission.

Understanding the differences between these chokes is crucial for any BJJ practitioner, as it allows them to choose the most effective technique for a given situation.
