BJJ Fundamental Drills – Hip Switch

In this BJJ fundamental drills video, we will be focusing on the hip switch technique. The hip switch is a fundamental movement in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that allows you to quickly change your position and create opportunities for submissions or escapes.

The hip switch involves transitioning from a side control position to a mount position or vice versa. It is a great technique to use when your opponent is trying to escape or when you want to secure a more dominant position.

To perform the hip switch, start in a side control position. Your opponent will be on their back with their legs extended. Begin by placing your near-side hand on your opponent’s near-side hip, while your other hand is placed on their far-side shoulder. This grip will help you control your opponent’s movement and prevent them from escaping.

Next, use your hips to drive your weight into your opponent. This will create pressure and make it harder for them to move. As you do this, simultaneously switch your base by bringing your knee closest to your opponent’s head up and over their body. At the same time, bring your other knee down towards their hip. This will allow you to rotate your body and switch from side control to mount.

Once you have completed the hip switch, make sure to establish a strong mount position. Your knees should be positioned close to your opponent’s hips, and your feet should be active and ready to base out if needed. Maintain control of your opponent by keeping your hands on their shoulders or by gripping their collar.

The hip switch can also be used to transition from mount to side control. To do this, start in a mount position with your knees close to your opponent’s hips. Use your hands to control their shoulders and hips, and then perform the switch by bringing your knee closest to their head down towards their hip, while bringing your other knee up and over their body.

By mastering the hip switch, you will have a versatile technique that can be applied in various situations during a BJJ match. It will allow you to maintain control over your opponent and create opportunities for submissions or escapes. Practice this drill regularly to improve your agility, balance, and overall BJJ skills.
