Difference between Kimura & Americana

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), there are numerous techniques that practitioners learn and master. Two popular techniques that often get confused are the Kimura and the Americana, both of which are effective joint locks that target the shoulder. In this video, we will delve into the differences between these two techniques, helping you understand their unique characteristics and when to use each one.

The Kimura and the Americana are similar in that they both involve controlling and manipulating the opponent’s shoulder joint. However, the key difference lies in the grip and the direction of force applied to the shoulder.

The Kimura, also known as the double wristlock, is executed by gripping the opponent’s wrist with one hand, while the other hand wraps around the opponent’s arm and grabs their own wrist. This creates a figure-four grip, effectively immobilizing the opponent’s arm. From there, the practitioner applies pressure by twisting the opponent’s arm towards their own back, putting immense strain on the shoulder joint. The Kimura is often used in a variety of positions, including side control, mount, and guard, and it is known for its versatility and effectiveness.

On the other hand, the Americana, also referred to as the keylock or ude-garami, involves gripping the opponent’s wrist with one hand while placing the other hand on their elbow. The practitioner then applies downward pressure on the opponent’s wrist, while simultaneously lifting their elbow. This creates an angle that puts immense stress on the shoulder, making it difficult for the opponent to resist. The Americana is commonly used when the opponent is in the mount position or from side control, and it is particularly effective in situations where the opponent’s arm is trapped or immobilized.

Understanding the differences between the Kimura and the Americana is crucial for BJJ practitioners, as each technique has its own advantages and applications. While the Kimura offers more mobility and control in terms of positioning, the Americana provides a more direct and powerful attack on the shoulder joint. By having a clear understanding of these distinctions, you will be able to adapt your strategy and choose the most appropriate technique in different situations.
